Kitchen Units
63If you are thinking of purchasing new kitchen units, then this is the article for you. Choosing new kitchen units is always a difficult task. The sheer range of different units on the market can appear to be very daunting at first. What type of units do you want? What materials do you want to incorporate? Where do you want the kitchen cabinets positioning? These are just a few of the questions that will need to be answered.
It can seem overwhelming, but when you break down the different elements the decision is easier to get your head around.
As with all decisions, there are several factors to consider when choosing which kitchen units to purchase. These are: your budget, your kitchen design preferences and your circumstances (how is your kitchen going to get used).
Choosing Your Kitchen Units
Let’s have a look at these issues in more detail. The amount you have got to spend on your kitchen units will be the most important factor that limits your choice of kitchen units. When budgeting for your kitchen units, it is also important to remember that there may be additional costs to consider – kitchen worktops, kitchen plinth lighting and kitchen flooring for example. You don’t want to be in the position where you have purchased top of the range kitchen units, but have had to settle for a low spec kitchen worktop. There are kitchen units to suit every budget, and there are things that you can do to reduce the price you will have to pay for high quality units. It is important to remember that cheap kitchen units do not have to also be low quality items.
If you are adding new kitchen units to an existing kitchen – rather than starting from scratch – matching your kitchens units to those kitchen design choices already present will be essential. For example, it may not be appropriate to add a black high gloss kitchen unit in the middle of a room decorated as a traditional country kitchen. Before purchasing your units, check that they go well with what’s already there, or what’s going to be added in the near future.
Finally your choice of kitchen units will also be dictated by how you intend to use your kitchen. For example, if you have young children, it might not be sensible to go for a gloss finish – unless you love trying to remove smudges and finger marks everyday. The placement of your kitchen units in your overall layout will also be influenced by your daily routines and lifestyle. Are you intending to incorporate a breakfast bar? Is the kitchen going to be purely for food preparation, or is it also going to fulfil a social function? It is important to decide on a layout before you start to investigate the available kitchen units.
Used Kitchen Units
It is possible to purchase used kitchen units. Often when people are replacing their kitchens they are happy to get anything for their old kitchen units, and as a result you can often snap up some very nice units at a great price. However, there are some things to consider if you are pursuing this course. Will you be able to fit the kitchen units yourself, or will you have to find a tradesman to complete the fitting for you? Will you be able to find the right units at the right price at the right time? Are any delays going to hold up other work that is taking place and will this delay end up costing you more than you’ve saved? How are you going to collect the used kitchen units? There are cheap kitchen units to be found, but take care and carefully consider the deal before you commit.
Fitted Kitchen Units or Freestanding Units
Most kitchen units are fitted, but it is possible to purchase some freestanding units. Island units are sometimes freestanding, allowing more flexibility with design and layout. The addition of a freestanding kitchen unit can dramatically alter a kitchen without having to replace all of the existing units.
Improving Your Kitchen Without Changing The Units
It is possible to freshen up and change your kitchen units without replacing them. The cheapest option is simply to change the kitchen unit door fittings. New doorknobs or handles can make a surprising difference to the overall look of a kitchen. Another option is to replace the kitchen unit doors, but leave the existing shells. This too, can make an impact for a fraction of the cost of buying all new kitchen units.
